In 1959, Oliver International (The Export Division) stepped outside the box and planned a showing of Oliver equipment to be matched by none. For years I have heard about the Oliver World Congress but since it was only held one time, information seemed to be minimal. However, I happened to find the two men that are credited for putting that show together and recently visited with them to get the story right from the source.

What would $2,000 buy you in 1949? For Russell Mason of Winchester, Tennessee it bought him a bright future. In 1949 Russell working at an Oliver dealership and was living in Atlanta with his wife and two sons. With $2,000 in capital, he signed an Oliver contract and started his own business in a rented concrete block building on the main street in town.

Oliver used half a dozen different engine builders throughout the years but the one most commonly used was Waukesha. While Oliver advertised that this was of their own engines, it was more Waukesha than Oliver.

Oliver introduced their 4440 in 1955 as a “masterpiece in plow design.” This pull-type plow used a new pipe frame. With the growing horsepower ratings of tractors, the equipment had to experience that same growth. The need to stretch out a plow to 5 or 6 bottoms was easily accomplished with this style of plow.
