Issue # 28: Oliverettes

The Oliver Farm Equipment Company was always looking for a way to attract attention to their products. Whether it was a purple tractor, a crawler that ran over eggs without breaking them or a tractor driving through a parade with no operator, there was always a gimmick.

When Oliver wanted to introduce the new models for 1960, they wanted to add a little something extra to the show. The 1800 and 1900 checkerboard would be the new models to introduce late in 1959. But with only two of these models, would they steal all of the attention from older 3-digit models? Oliver wanted to assure this wouldn't happen so they created a gimmick to show their ease of handling and showmanship.

Realizing the presentations were done to a male dominant crown, Oliver felt they could get their attention if women were involved in it. George Bird, Charles City plant manager, came up with the unique idea of having flashy dressed women driving around on Oliver tractors and dancing formation.
