Issue # 35: Wide Wide World of White

Wide Wide World of White

Oliver in the 1970’s

By Jason Hasert

The White Farm Equipment story began in November 1960 with the acquisition of Oliver Heritage readers’ favorite brand - Oliver. In issues #33 and #34 of Oliver Heritage we began tracing the corporate strategy of White Motors to market and produce three popular brands of farm equipment under the Oliver/Minneapolis-Moline/Cockshutt names. The keystone of the White Farm Equipment brands was the Oliver Farm Equipment Company and its vast line of tractors and machinery.

Often the history books on Oliver focus in-depth on the glory days of the Oliver Fleetline tractors, ending their coverage around 1960 and briefly conclude with a few paragraphs on the last Oliver being produced in 1976. The years 1970-1974 were an action packed era for Oliver and we saw some of the company’s most refined tractors and products produced. In this issue of Oliver Heritage we will look at the last generation of tractors to bear the Oliver name and the corporate events leading to the retirement of the Oliver brand in 1975.

Starting in the late 1960’s White Farm Equipment began looking at the strengths of the three tractor lines they had acquired from 1960 through 1963. The company assessed ways to engineer the advantages of Oliver and Minneapolis-Moline tractors into the company’s base tractor of the future. White engineers identified Minneapolis-Moline engines and the Oliver Hydraul-Shift transmission as a good combination for the next generation of tractors from WHITE.
