If you compare Oliver and Cockshutt, you will find numerous similarities. These 2 compannies mirrored each other throughout their years of production and it is ironic that both companies were bought up by the same corporation and molded into one, eventually suffering the same demise.
James Oliver and his family came to America in search of a better life. James Cockshutt, Sr. immigrated to Canada to escape the poor economic conditions of England. James Oliver began his plowmaking career outtside of South Bend, Indiana in 1855 at the South Bend Iron Works and James Cockshutt, Jr. began his plowmaking career in Brantford Ontario in 1877 at the Brantford Plow Works.
Oliver and Cockshutt were both driven men with a dream of building the best plow available to the farmer and both succeeded. Both of them were men with strong worth ethics and commitment to their community.
