The engine we are dealing with is a Hercules DJXC used in an Oliver OC-12. It also applies to the Hercules DOOC which is used in an Oliver-Cletrac AD.

Several years ago we sold a used engine for an Oliver OC-12 diesel crawler. I don’t remember specifically anymore where the buyer was from. We try to represent our used engines as well as we can by test running them. However, not knowing the previous history of these engines, sometimes problems do arise.

This was one of those times and would span several years before the problem was solved. This particular individual had an OC-12 with a bad engine that he wished to get operating. We told him what was available. He promptly told us that he required a written warranty with such a costly purchase as this. I told him that we do not give written warranties with used engines since little is known about their past history. I told him that if any major problems arose, we would stand behind it and would try to make it good for him. He proceeded to tell me that he is also sort of a back woods lawyer on the side and is used to doing things by the book and not by word of mouth. He failed to mention the location of the tree stump where he was educated but we finally came to an agreement and he said he would take the engine.

He came to pickup the engine and, wouldn’t you know it, it was Friday the 13th! Now, I’m not a supersticious person by nature but I was starting to wonder how everything would work out after observing this individual’s abrasive, demanding behavior.
