Issue # 5: It Makes No Difference Whether Your Tractor Is:
In 1966 Oliver introduced a new sales campaign in order to boost the sale of Oliver plows to farmers that were not Oliver customers. Although it might have been in the back of their minds, the purpose of this campaign was not to sell tractors, but to push the superior plows to ALL farmers. This program was called “The Color-Blind Plow”.
Oliver boasted that it didn’t make any different whether your tractor was red, green, orange, blue or even purple....they had a plow though would work great behind any color machine.
At the Growing “O” shows which traveled around the country, Oliver included a purple Oliver tractor to pull the plow they were promoting. When the show was held in Mason, City Iowa and Charles City, the driver of the tractor was adorned in a silk jockey suit to indicated the speed at which a farmer could plow with this implement.
I know of at least 3 different purple tractors that were specially painted to use in different areas. There were various size tractors used for this demonstration from a 1650 to an 1850. In all probability, the tractors were taken back and repainted because I don’t know of too many farmers in the 60’s that would want to pay full price for a purple tractor. However, there may be a tractor running around Nebraska, Iowa or Michigan that has purple paint underneath that meadow green.
